I suspect that people in rural areas are at the blunter end of nothing working any more. Basic infrastructure maintenance, services etc all seem to fall apart faster when distances are larger. If you care about your local services then please get involved in running them.
The Tories have promised low tax and better services for decades now. People have bought that lie as a possibility. It’s pretty obvious to those of us spending way more time than is healthy involved in running local authorities that you can’t have both. “Bloated public services” is a Tory lie: the political decision is *what* services we want to club together to deliver.
Many Tories on the right wing of the party want us to sink or swim- no public services and every man for himself (because they rarely consider women and children in their thinking). Is this the society you want, with little to no possibility for social advancement?
@EleanorRylance no at all I detest the Tories, problem was the lib Dems were complicit in installing this Tory government inder Swinson. As did the right in the labour party.
@EleanorRylance that’s what they dream of and they’ve never been as close to realising the Dickensian dream than these days. No public money on services means no taxation for mean Tory rich landowning class, apart from police and army to protect their wealth. However, someone’s got to pay for the power networks, food processing, water and sewage & cleansing networks, and even their darling private health service - it can’t exist without public money to educate & train staff.
