This is bad: One of Denmark’s finest foreign correspondents, Matilde Kimer of the public broadcaster DR, was banned from Russia first and now from Ukraine. Both sides accuse her of propaganda for the other side. What she does is fearless, professional journalism #pressfreedom #journalism #UkraineWar #ukraine #russia #censorship

@lottefolke

Woohoo, justice! Glad that Ukraine realised their mistake and corrected it.

@lottefolke

This is simply not okay.
Matilde Kimer has risked her life making sure that the Danish people got the most accurate information about the war in Ukraine and thus making sure that the Danish people support the aid going to Ukraine.
And this is the reward?

I don't know if Ukraine understand how journalism works in Denmark, but our journalists are not propaganda puppets for any side or state.

#pressfreedom #ukraine

@lottefolke This is a serious error from the Ukrainian authorities.
FSB talking points. Ukrainerne er dobbeltsprogede.
@mok0 @lottefolke
@lottefolke #pressfreedom #ukraine #UkraineWar agree Lotte. The hallmark of Matilde Kimer’s journalism is to let local people speak, allowing us to meet the human face of the war. Always dignified, never sensational. Journalism at its best. In November Matilde Kimer received the prestigious Ebbe Munck price of honour for her “insightful and courageous reporting from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine”, handed over by HM Queen Margrethe.

@bolidegaard @lottefolke Not familiar with her work regarding Ukraine but traveling to Donetsk/Crimea does raise some questions, I guess that was before the war in which case it is of course still something journalists should have been able to do. Are there any articles published by her or others that provide additional context?

I do think it's not really realistic to compare the journalistic standards of a country at war to one that is not but of course that's not saying this isn't wrong.

@73ms @bolidegaard @lottefolke

Why does it raise questions if she travelled to Donetsk/Crimea? She is a journalist, how is she supposed to do her job without talking to people and following up on stories?

@Tazor @73ms @bolidegaard . Travelling to Donbass and everywhere else I’m Ukraine and Russia and the war zone is her job as the chief correspondent covering the conflict. She works for Denmark’s public service broadcaster so there are thousands of pieces of her reporting in tv, radio and digital on their homepage Dr.dk
@Tazor @bolidegaard @lottefolke Because western journalists have typically not had access to those regions, especially not after the 2022 war started. Reporting has exclusively been by Russian state-associated actors. During the war in Donbass Simon Ostrovsky was kidnapped for a while when doing reporting in the area for example.

@73ms @bolidegaard @lottefolke

That still doesn't answer why it is suspicious that she was there.

Yes, it is dangerous for journalists to be anywhere in Ukraine, she knows that and accepts the risk. The idea that she was peddling Russian propaganda is absurd to anyone who actually knows her & her reporting.

@Tazor @bolidegaard @lottefolke How does it not answer it. Like I said being able to go there many times is highly unusual because real journalists typically can't. We've seen Russian troops kill more than 10 western journalists during this war IIRC.

Again, I said right away that I don't know her reporting and that it doesn't mean someone who has done that automatically has to be working for the Russians or anything like that. Ukraine is far from perfect when it comes to freedom of the press.

@Tazor @bolidegaard @lottefolke That's not to say it is impossible and certainly very courageous of her if she's been able to do reporting there but the people in power there being so hostile towards real journalists means it warrants a closer look if someone has been able to travel there a lot.
@73ms @Tazor @bolidegaard everyone can take a closer look every day, she published on Denmark’s largest media platform with the ressources that come from that.
@lottefolke @Tazor @bolidegaard Despite what I said and even though I have limited knowledge of this I'm inclined to think the Ukrainian officials are most likely in the wrong here based on what I have seen. I understand the Danish FM is going to raise her issue with the Ukrainians so hopefully it gets sorted out. I do wonder what she has reported that has drawn the ire of the Ukrainian SBU.

@73ms @lottefolke @bolidegaard

I think it is combination of a mistake and being over-cautious. Totally understandable that they are vigilant, but they should reach out to the journalists and origin countries to check their information.
