Lesson learned: when importing a follower list to a new Mastodon account, it lets everyone know you just followed them, which—I was not expecting. I am not 100% sure I am moving because it is a fair amount of effort (not to mention an ongoing hosting charge!) to run your own Mastodon server. But, maybe a small invitation-only one is a reasonable idea…? #noxp

@arilin welcome to the world of single user instances

now @Xipher and i can badger you about all the best ways to tune your hot rod-- server

@pinball @Xipher Assuming I stick with it, advice will be useful. I may invite a few more users, I don't know. (Depends on load; this is a fairly low end Digital Ocean droplet.)

@arilin @pinball Yeah its not that bad, all of my frustrations really come from the fact that Ruby is... not good and makes no sense from an administrative perspective.

Keep everything as it is out of the box and it 'just works'.

I do... highly recommend, as in, don't do it without doing this kinda recommend, using an S3 storage provider and your own sub domain as a cname for the storage bucket, not enough characters left to explain why /exactly/ but /trust me/... it resolves long term issues.

@Xipher @pinball I may look at getting B2 storage set up soon. How soon depends on how quickly local storage gets annoying. I'll monitor things. :)
