I've been thinking about communities that have been meaningful to me.

1. USENET of the 80s (specifically talk.bizarre)

2. 90s rave scene, and the vrave online community

3. 90s SF web scene communities like Cyborganic +. spacebar + Thursday night dinner

4. Early(ish) days of Facebook, where I reconnected with old friends

5. Twitter, and connecting with like-minded people across the world.

Curious to see what the future brings!

Interesting to note that 1, 2 and 3 all felt more fringe, whereas 4 and 5 felt like they were startup backed (small at first, but then growing mainstream over time)

Mastodon feels more like 1, 2 and 3 now, which is nice, but there are aspects of 4 and 5 that I also liked during their peak moments.

@skuwamoto The rave scene here was definitely the most forming scene for me, ever. The things it showed me directed me to places, experiences, people, and technologies I didn't know about before.
