"you actually breathed better more concise air here."

You have got to be kidding me. This is sooo pretentious... please don't be like this wow.

"Here it feels like conversations are more respectful and informative."

Hard disagree. I see little difference. Though it is better than what twitter has become in the past 5 weeks or so. I will give your that. But there are reply guys and slurs and all the stuff that twitter had. The stuff that everything has.

@futurebird what are "reply guys", I don't think I have come across the term.
THE NINE TYPES OF REPLY GUYS | MyHub.AI

@SteveA

In my case it tended to take the form of persistent and unwanted corrections and "advice" delivered with a condescending flavor. For others, particularly younger women who post any photos at all of themselves it can become much more creepy.

@futurebird
I hear you. I can see how that would get tiring, quickly. Thanks for the reply. 😄

@SteveA @futurebird this sub-thread is a great example of how replies should be done: sincerely and politely. A true Reply Guy would have just hotly accused the post of using "obscure jargon" or "jingoistic inwords" or something.

I will say I have found more sincere, polite discourse on Mastodon than on Twitter, with a few caveats:

1) Reply Guys absolutely do exist on Mastodon. I've seen them myself. Mostly taking the form of people defending Mastodon's open source nature without admitting that there's still room for improvement here.

2) Often that politeness can come off as condescension. I'm pretty sure I sound condescending with my use of words like "discourse" and even my focus on politeness itself. I don't mean to be snooty, I swear!

3) I'm a cis white male, so my experience at Mastodon has been different than theirs. Anyone who defends Mastodon needs remember that not everyone has the same experience here. I play the game of life on its easiest settings. Others do not

Urban Dictionary: reply guy

1. A man who behaves in an overly familiar way and is always replying to the social media messages of a woman he doesn't know or is barely acquainted with. 2. An annoying man who replies to social media messages, in general - whether this annoyance is due to a perceived know-it-all attitude, excessive familiarity, banal arguments that the annoyed user doesn't feel compelled to reply to again and again, or violation of some imagined pecking order.

Awesome, I keep forgetting about urban dictionary. I used to browse it randomly.

Fighting the urge to reply to this message ironically...
@wcbdata @futurebird
😆 I was thinking along those lines when I responded to the post but I was also genuinely curious
@SteveA @futurebird they are the online equivalent of the office bloke who assumes women are barely sentient and speaks so patronisingly at you that you form military grade logistics plans to avoid being anywhere near them at any time
@Sarahadapt @futurebird
😆 Too funny but alas, I think I understand.

"Reply guys" are taking over the internet. Here, we explain what they are and how you can make sure you're not on of them.

@futurebird Oh no, it's the "actually, polyamory is a more evolved type of relationship structure" snootiness all over again, isn't it.

Eeeuuuugh. Y'all, every social media is just made of people, and people remain people wherever you go. The strengths of the individual site/system are in how well it lets us curate the experience we want and protect us from malicious actors, that's IT.
