If Satan punishes bad people, doesn't that make him the good guy.
@ADDiane Saturn loves justice!👍🙂
@ADDiane Satan killed a few people in the bible, God a few billion....so yeah

@ADDiane

I could be wrong, but i think I remember that satan asks permission. An example would be republicans accepting russian money. by keeping it they have answered.

@ADDiane John Milton: "Uhhh... have you read my fanfic?"
@ADDiane: In the earliest known ancestors of modern Abrahamic religions, Satans was essentially either Elohim's or YHWH's loyal opposition — a bit of a free agent, specialising in the dirty and unpleasant work, but playing on the same team. He was only later made into an absolute enemy figure as a result of extreme varieties of dualist worldview getting popular, but even in some remaining Old Testament books, you can see him, for example, playing friendly betting games with YHWH.
@riley i was always a fan of biblical Satan

@ADDiane: The catch is, Bible was written over so long a time that you can see a lot of different versions of Satan in it. He kept evolving as new theological features got popular, and old ones went into fashion.

For example, the notion of Satan mass-punishing bad people is not really found anywhere in the Old Testament. With some effort, it can be retconned in there, but historically, it's a Gnostic idea, younger than most of the books in modern Bible, and initially popularised by Christians. (Gnostics were fond of inventing new and innovative ideas, but not that fond of letting everybody know.) So, that kind of Satan is nowadays primarily found in those Abrahamic religions that got built on Christianity, such as Islam and Mormonism
