Random #algae #edna question. I have a student who is going to be analyzing fish guts for microplastics and I thought a neat add-on would be to get a sense of the diversity of algae they are consuming. How would I go about doing that? I am a complete molecular ecology noob!

@dralgaegirl Best way would be to do some high-throughput sequencing on a MiSeq. I'm not sure about algae, but we typically target the 16S rRNA regions for bacteria sequencing.

@PartridgeCG @dralgaegirl you can do 18S for the algae. If they are still intact after all that digestion in the gut…
