@mdales I think your "Not everyone wants their photo taken" https://mynameismwd.org/photos/not_everyone_wants_their_photo_taken/ photo is more interesting than it would've been when you were first framing it.

It's a bit like @brpimages's photo that I boosted earlier https://mastodon.me.uk/@brpimages@mastodon.social/109382245567572638 😀

Not everyone wants their photo taken

my name is mwd

@amcewen @brpimages I think you're right - even though the imperfection of the focus bugs me, it definitely tells a more interesting story.

And humbled to be even slightly compared to that image by @brpimages - it's got such a strong story to it, I really love that image.

@mdales @amcewen thank you, a snap from long ago, thankfully I kept my negatives safe, I wonder how many digital images will be around in 50 years

@brpimages @amcewen I suspect those of us who care about our images look after them irrespective of format?

My digital photo catalogue goes back almost 21 years at this point - not quite half way there, but it'll definitely make it to that way I'd say.

I agree a lot will be lost, but I imagine that the negatives to most my childhood has been similarly lost - good family photos go in albums, but rarely the negatives for most folk?

@mdales @amcewen I suppose being a photographer it's goes with the job, besides retaining negs I back up all my images, the secret is not to delete because at the time the images has no value as in later years may be part of social history.

@brpimages @amcewen many times yes!

Even on a personal scale, I went through my photo archive properly for the first time during the initial lock down, and there were photos in there from the 00s that I'd ignored before, and probably a less retain-ist mindset would have thus deleted, but now a combination of my changed tastes and improved editing ability helped me find gems in them.

@mdales @amcewen exactly, I found the same with my 70's negatives, when I revisited in later years I realised had historic and social records which had no significance when I shot them.
