I had been telling me daughter that energy is the capacity for doing work. However I realised this isn't really accurate, so I've been googling around for a better definition, without much success so far. My confusion is summarised in this ChatGPT session.

Can anyone help me understand what "energy" really is?

@jh energy is pent-up potential entropy. Entropy is the dispersal of energy.

@jh another way to say it is it's a generalization of motion, sound, heat, light, radiation... It's the potential to make waves, so to speak.

@jh it's like there's an abstract "currency" that can be converted among all of these forms, and its dispersal is called entropy, while its concentration is called energy.
