Me: moves personal account to new instance
New instance: *dies*

Doh.

@gamingonlinux It isn't easy, especially if no one prepares for the uptick in activitypub linking, it literally pulls in data even from other instances based on say the post you link to, so you literally have to have plenty of storage available.

@gamingonlinux ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thundering herd problems.

(insert reference to classic "heard/herd of elephants" joke here)

People/orgs setting up instances on their own is one solution, but it takes a bit of know-how and resources to do that.

@ronabop @gamingonlinux True, took me an entire day to get Mastodon working with Docker. Add some to that if it's your first time setting anything up and you're looking at half a week worth of work just to get the instance up.

@gamingonlinux

Time to set up your own, methinks! ๐Ÿ˜œ
(yes, I realize the irony, posting this from not my own instance!)

@gamingonlinux It's a pro and con of Mastodon. We can be sure that no one point of failure will kill the entire network. But we also have less confidence that any one instance will stick around.
@gamingonlinux how does one even up about doing that? This site still confuses me
@B1GPP3N3RGY @gamingonlinux There's a guide somewhere from Mastodon showing how you can move your account to a new instance but it basically boils down to permanently redirecting the old accoun to the new one.
@gamingonlinux I was thinking to host my own, but its too much of a hassle to maintain it. Mastodon is impossible to move toots to another instance, which is a big concern for me, if my self hosted instance died, all my posts are gone.
@gamingonlinux considering doing my own single user instance just because it will be fun...and that way I'm not subject to someone else's server.
@gamingonlinux Selfhosting is best for personal accounts ๐Ÿ˜‰
@gamingonlinux That's someone you have made me just think about. Hope i have chosen a good instance,
