The thing that's going to fuck Twitter with that new policy on linking is not blocking Mastodon links.

It's blocking Insta.

Politics Twitter is shouty but not actually the bulk of the platform.

That's celebs and lifestyle. And that stuff is pure insta crossover territory.

@garius it's the linktr.ee ban more than anything that is both insane and damaging.

Well next to the entire concept.

@wyvern @garius They had to, otherwise everyone would just use it to link to their other accounts on the proscribed socials.

@gothytim @wyvern @garius
They didn't *have* to do any of it.

If they genuinely sat down and researched and constructed a business case for banning links to other social media, I'd expect stuff like linktree would already be enough friction to not be nearly so damaging. But this isn't a carefully-researched business move, this is a spoiled child having a tantrum.

@Sanakism @wyvern @garius Well, yeah - but if you start down the road of “we’re going to stop people linking to competing social media sites” then that’s an inevitable consequence.

Of course the policy has since been quietly reversed anyway (though some URLs - including tech.lgbt - are still blocked from being posted)
