It’s actually endearing to me that the vast majority of the “John Mastodon” jokes are so earnest. It’s like everyone is handling humor and irony with a pair of tweezers. Even when this place goes all meme-happy, it can’t help but be what it is.

Sometimes Mastodon seems like the old blogosphere, or the best parts of Twitter, or the worst parts of both… And then you get reminded that despite being around for years, it’s still really a baby social media network.

It’s like in Star Trek TNG when Data builds another AI, calls it his daughter, and tries to teach it everything he knows in just a few days. It’s not ready yet for praise or blame. We have to teach it and let it grow.
