I think it's really important for people to realize how new it is in the United States for a social media site people trusted to be ideologically weaponized and redesigned in the autocratic manner Twitter is experiencing.

Most online communities are walled castles, but Twitter is adding barbed wire and guard towers to keep people in.

We need to try to have some compassion for those who never saw it coming, and simply didn't get out before the social / personal price of leaving became higher.

@farrisswisher I used to be 2nd in charge of LiveJournal.com in its early years, when it was open source and volunteer run.

The owner/creator unfortunately sold it to SixApart, a blogging co, who sold it to a Russian co. linked to a Putin oligarch.

After the sale, it started getting manipulated by the state, in somewhat autocratic ways... Lots of Russian users left, rather than have their content hosted in country. What Elon is doing is actually more extreme and more concerning in key ways.
