Behind the rank for the “largest democracy in the world” lie stories of individual misfortunes and an unprecedented systemic decline.
It is no surprise that it is being accused of being an “Electoral Autocracy,” hence the rank.
But there’s still hope.

In India journalists are intimidated, assaulted and even killed by powerful people for publishing things they don’t like. The law is generally well-written, but it is not consistently enforced. And things have gotten worse for press freedom in India in the last few years under Modi. So I am not surprised by the ranking, just really saddened.

@jsoref @mastodon.social @normalguy @conradhackett Thank you. The drop is definitely valid... not knowing much about the country, I had it also rank higher than it’s previous rank (67th) in my mind though... but sure seems a valid classification and ranking given the facts on the ground
