In the 13th century a 7 year old schoolboy named Onfim doodled on his birch bark. He drew himself as a warrior & as “a wild beast” and scribbled a greeting to his friend Daniel.

These are his drawings, unearthed by archaeologists near Novgorod, Russia #history

@RoisinMac82 Oh I couldn't love this more!
@BeebsyMcA I know! The pics have been going about for a while now but I came across them again today and had to share.
@RoisinMac82 I'm so glad you did. It's so moving. I have pictures like that on my fridge ❤️

@RoisinMac82

Neat! For the curious, here is the Wikipedia article on Onfim: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onfim

And now I've learned a new word: berestology: the scientific study of birchbark manuscripts. Thanks!

@RoisinMac82

So sad that there weren't refrigerators yet.

@RoisinMac82

An amazing "open body" style of drawing where the sides of the body seem to become the entire legs.

@RoisinMac82 Love it 😊
Question, how did they know his age? I was thinking it must have been in some context, e.g. found in a 1st or 2nd grade classroom, but there couldn’t have been too many of those around in the 13th century…
@MichaelPorter The archeologists who found it come to that approx age, I’m assuming it must be from things/text found at the site.
This is so touching. Kids are gonna be kids, and humans are always used to be like that, eh?
