The field of immunology has lost a giant in Emil Unanue. To the surprise of no one who knew him, he fought off glioblastoma for far longer than the prognosis would suggest. He won the Lasker prize in 1995 for his work on antigen processing that forms the basis of our textbooks. He didn't offer praise often or lightly, but when he did, boy it felt good. This simple email to me after a seminar, when I was an assistant professor, lifted my spirits for weeks! We will miss him.
@deeptabhattacha oh, this is very sad indeed. I had the opportunity to interact with him a bit when working in T1D and always thought he was a very interesting humble person. An excellent #scientist and #Immunologist .
@dmaseda Don't know about humble, but definitely interesting and definitely brilliant!
@deeptabhattacha we had a shared interest in the mechanisms by which insulin antigenicity kicks of diabetes. He would email out of the blue extremely thoughtful messages titled only with “Hola!” His work influenced our work tremendously
