@mikeylikestech @shunley42 Oh yeah, absolutely. And as a Certified Internet Person, assuming Mastodon catches on I think I will spin up my own private server and post from there.

And to be honest, I think that possibility alone makes Mastodon a pretty powerful idea.

@TechConnectify @[email protected] @shunley42 I think instances should be completely invisible to the user unless they really go digging, otherwise a ton of people and orgs who just want to post basketball game schedule updates/irl community meeting notes are completely turned off. I think it should be more like TOR, where people run endpoints because they support the mission at large rather than a particular interest/topic.
@WoodgrainSkin @TechConnectify @mikeylikestech @shunley42 i think the issue here would be moderation. instances create variety in terms of what is acceptable, so everyone can find a home of sorts. if an instance becomes too big it can be bad. what you describe is functionally one big instance, which creates moderation challenges
