I’m at that point in my life where I need to start thinking seriously about data storage.

My current debate is between a RAID system and professional storage like the LaCie D2 storage drive.

This is too much for my brain.

@ViperMom149 What are you looking to accomplish?

Accessible? backups? what kind of devices?

@thegpfury Hi Will! I’m looking to backup pictures. I’ve been a photographer since 2009 and have about 5 external hard drives that I just keep buying more of and sometimes they fail. I lost several good series and it’s going to cost me about $1,500 to recover the photos from a broken external hard drive.
I’m thinking a RAID system would be great and I’d eventually want to build my own server so I can access it from any device and any location.

@ViperMom149

That's great. I've been doing photography since about then as well. Some professional stuff, but mainly family/nature stuff.

So yeah, definitely want to consolidate. Remember, RAID isn't backup, but it does give you some stability on the files you keep locally.

Have you looked at a Synology or something similar? I've got one running remotely that I use for offsite backups, and it's been rock solid for the past year. It'd give you a good stable front for home, as well as giving remote access.

Then I'd look at some sort of cloud backup for offsite backups so that you don't have to worry about some random failure at home.

@thegpfury A co-worker recommended Synology. He really likes their products.

I’ve been looking into LaCie products because they’re backed with a 5 year data recovery warranty. I’ve just never heard from anyone who actually uses them.

You care to share any pictures?

These are a few of my favorites I’ve taken over the years.

@ViperMom149 oh wow, those are amazing!!! Love the multiple exposures!

@thegpfury I love those! I really like the concert photos for Abel. I want to shoot more concerts - they’re so exciting!
