BTW, someone gave me an answer to this question!
Spider's mother was killed in the assault on the Tree of Souls from the first movie; it's in the comics.

The oil from the tulkun is called amrita. In the 4DX showing, whenever the tulkun come on screen, they pump the theater with the smell of ambergris.
(Definitely smells better than blubber, the more accurate analogy.)
