I don't usually gush about my career on the internet. My hobbies and personal projects I'm always gushing about, but with my actual professional career it feels like it's been a long time since I've truly been happy at my job.

But my current job? Love it. Absolutely love it. I never saw myself as a consultant. I never thought I'd work at a tech giant like IBM. Though, technically it's not IBM proper, but still.

And after 22 years of writing code I finally have a Senior Software Engineer title.

@afrozenpeach Congrats! Was this as a part of moving jobs? If so, that's exactly how I got my senior role as well. Left one company as a software engineer, entered the next one as senior and team lead.

@zhoekstra yup. got laid off at the beginning of october. got a new position with the senior title near the end of october. just started my first project for them last week.

it's a great feeling :D

@afrozenpeach My last company held senior in front of me like a carrot. Just do this one more thing and you'll be senior, they said.

It's really nice when someone recognizes your existing skills and just gives you to role to grow into.

@zhoekstra exactly! Not only am I a Senior Software Engineer now, but I'm Senior Associate Level 3 (out of 4) - which means I'm nearly as far up the chain as I can get without going for a management role. Which I might end up shooting for.

@zhoekstra i've been chasing senior at several jobs, always being told to "learn their stack" and "prove myself" and "promotions in the future"

Only for something to happen preventing those promises from ever coming to fruition.
