The problem with doing it as a URL is it wants the person who is trying to follow you log into the specific mastodon instance you're on. Since we may be on different instances, it's better to use the search feature on your own instance to find and follow others on different instances.

That's why I share my handle with the @-mark first. It makes the searching faster.
