so I have been trying something different with my morning routine. I took my fully connected phone out of my room and use an older phone which has sleep encouraging apps and an alarm.

then when I get up i don't touch the internet for the time it takes me to do a teeny bit of yoga, a small chore like stuffing a load of laundry in the washer, listening to a non fiction audiobook or podcast, a little morning journaling, whatever it is.

Then I make a cup of coffee and come hang out.

it's early days but the most immediate effects are

hey, I made my bed!
Even just a little bit of yoga feels good!
hey, i'm on top of my laundry!
hey, I already cleared a rumination loop by journaling and deciding what to do!

So it's been calming so far.

@clpolk Not a bad idea at all! I may follow your advice. Reading the news first thing can't be good for my equilibrium anyway. ;)
@clpolk damn, this is such a simple idea but I love it. My phone doesn’t add anything to my bedroom except insomnia and a clock, and I can fix the latter.
