Naming Rep Terry Roy (R-Deerfield) to lead the #NHHouse Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee is pretty shocking given Roy's checkered history of involvement with criminal justice and public safety. #NHPolitics 1/8
Court documents reveal Roy first ran afoul of the law as a minor, appearing before juvenile court on two delinquency complaints, one for a false alarm, another for larceny. Then, "while serving in the US Army in 1990, Roy admitted to possession & use of cocaine." #NHPolitics 2/8
After leaving the army, Roy joined the Gardner (MA) Police Department. In October 1997, he was the subject of a domestic violence investigation, placed on administrative leave, and directed to surrender his license to carry firearms. #NHPolitics 3/8
Roy was not charged, but he was terminated for cause in April 1998. His termination letter stated that the decision was based on a series of abusive incidents between Roy & his girlfriend. The termination was later reduced to a suspension by the Civil Service. #NHPolitics 4/8
In December 1998, Police Chief James Dufort revoked Roy's license to carry a firearm after determining Roy had lied and used false information in his 1995 firearm permit application: "I find that you are not a suitable person to be licensed to possess a firearm." #NHPolitics 5/8
One year later, Roy was dismissed from the Gardner Police Department for just cause by Mayor Charles Manca: "Because you cannot legally use a firearm on duty, I am compelled to terminate your employment." #NHPolitics 6/8
After financial challenges including Chapter 13 bankruptcy and an adverse ruling by the US Tax Court, Roy appears to have signed the Free State Project pledge in February 2015 and then moved to Deerfield. He was first elected to the #NHHouse in 2018. #NHPolitics 7/8
When Rep. Roy is not chairing the #NHHouse Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, he can be found hanging out on Gab—a haven for neo-Nazis and white supremacists—spreading a toxic stew of far-right fever dreams and conspiracy theories. #NHPolitics 8/8
