In German, the blank space " " is not as common as in English.

We create giant monster words like this:

giant = Riese
giant monster = Riesenmonster
giant monster words = Riesenmonsterwörter

So, once you have learned to speak German you speak a Riesenmonsterwörtersprache.

Enjoy our language!

@jensclasen Once you feel comfortable enough, why not go and enjoy the story of Rhubarb Barbara's bar and the three bearded barbarians? https://youtu.be/gG62zay3kck

@jensclasen
Which is a feature and not a bug. It's one of the few things, I really like about German language.

Worst: verbs at the end of sentence

@jensclasen Kennt jemanden der Eisenbahnknotenpunkthinundherschieber ?
@jensclasen I always think of German as a language created not organically, like English, but according to specifications. So you get these structures that at first sight seem like a bizarre contraption, but when you look a little deeper just fall into place and you go "of course - it makes sense". But three genders though? I mean... 😉
@jensclasen Your Scrabble scores must be amazing!
@stevefoerster @jensclasen sadly Scrabble boards are only 15 letters wide, each player only holds 7… severely limits the options 😇.
Declination/conjugation do a lot more for us in this regard… I currently have KLÖNENDES on my board, and starting from KLÖN all 1-letter-additions create legal forms of the word 😎
@jensclasen I still remember that one flyer I once found at work advertising Wasserabrasivsuspensionsstrahlverfahren. longest word I've ever seen in the wild, and therefore my favourite
@jensclasen And you look it up in the Riesenmonsterwörtersprachewörterbuch.
@jensclasen @ryanschultz That was one of my favorite things about learning German. (Along with stacking verbs at the ends of sentences.)
@jensclasen Theorie! Kein Mensch würde so etwas sagen! ;)
@trimaris @jensclasen doch, wass denken Sie von
Windschuzscheibenwischer ☕
@jensclasen Due to this we do like abbreviations. German isn't the language of giant monster words but the language of grizzly abbreviations.
@jensclasen not really a terrible thing. at least you know for sure which modifiers are acting on specific words.
@jensclasen Ich sag dazu nur Kurzfristenergieversorgungssicherungsmaßnahmenverordnung!
@jensclasen "German long words" is mostly myth. Famous word inventor Wortes^ Georg likes to use as much word as possible.

^ The theory here is that the "spiders" in the famous "spiders Georg" is in the genitive (i.e. Georg of spider).
