States restricting access to abortion are also poorer with less access to maternal care, thus have higher maternal & infant deaths, particular among more disadvantaged populations https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/issue-briefs/2022/dec/us-maternal-health-divide-limited-services-worse-outcomes and, implementation of Republican Supreme Court's new anti-choice policy is going to make this *much worse* in next few years as restricting states lose access to abortion (frequently necessary medical procedure to save mother's lives) and those clinics that provided all sorts of related care.
The U.S. Maternal Health Divide: The Limited Maternal Health Services and Worse Outcomes of States Proposing New Abortion Restrictions

States banning/restricting abortion have fewer maternity care providers, more maternity care “deserts,” and higher rates of maternal mortality and infant death.

Between the terrible healthcare, crime, poverty, it is not surprising that people born into Republican controlled states have a much lower life-expectancy than people born in Democratic states, but the numbers are startling: top 5 states (all Democratic) average 7 more years than bottom 5 states (all Republican). *Seven Years* longer life expectancy.
@DavMicRot Living in a red state is bad for your health!
Study shows life expectancy among Native populations plummeted between 2019 and 2021

Life expectancy for American Indian and Alaska Natives declined over the past two years, and dropped more than other populations in the U.S., according to a recently released national study.

@DavMicRot

You forgot diet. Growing up in Texas, vegetables were scarce on our family tables, and when they appeared, they were drowned in dairy products and over-cooked.

@DavMicRot Yes, but the average life expectancy in Japan is 84.5 years.
@DavMicRot @cofax I'd really like to see this mapped by census tracts (or something similarly granular) rather than states -- I think that would be more informative and I suspect there are a lot of differences within states as well.
@DavMicRot this is wild, but unsurprising

@DavMicRot

Not forgetting the problems of substantially lower rates of education in red states that have and will continue to contribute significantly to these broader problems. Not only by hampering their ability to address them properly through substantive public policy decisions but compounded by poor and regressive representation.

@DavMicRot

Although people from Alabama are often so annoying it usually seems like they're here much, much longer than 80 years

@DavMicRot I'm not sure how these color-coded tiers were divided, but it's notable that the top 4 tiers differ by a year or so, but then there's a 3-year jump between the 4th (pale peach) and the 5th/bottom (white) tier.

@DavMicRot I ran for office in SC on a campaign based on bringing these facts and numbers to light.

Too many shrugged their shoulder and said, "We don't care. Just root out woke indoctrination in our schools!"

@DavMicRot The GOP kills. Been doing it for decades.
@DavMicRot Scary but factual thoughts!! 😲
@DavMicRot Do Dems ever use this data in their talking points while campaigning?
@Mallulady no, they worry that by pointing out how poor & unhealthy people are in Republican controlled areas, Republicans/Mainstream Media will turn it on the Democrats as if they were attacking Republican voters, rather than the Republican elite who make life so difficult for Republican voters.
@DavMicRot Unbelievable. States like Kentucky keep voting in Mitchell!
@DavMicRot But would you really want to live 7 years longer under Republican rule?
@DavMicRot This continues to increase the red/blue divide where blue areas manage tumultuous times and thrive, while red areas sink further behind economically, culturally, spiritually which makes them even more vulnerable to demagogues who vilify and gaslight in their thirst for authoritarian power.
