I'd never heard of the @elonjet Twitter account until a certain sociopath removed it from the big website he now controls.

I gather it's back online there, but I'm glad there's an @elonjet Mastodon account that I think everyone should tell their friends and colleagues about.

@dangillmor @elonjet if only there was some sort of name for making something famous by complaining about it
@dangillmor -- i think it's horrific as awful as anything the nazis do. how would you like it if it were done to you.
@davew @dangillmor Sorry, Dave… trying to parse…. what exactly is horrific—the public posting of private travel data by elonjet, or the suspension of elonjet’s twitter acct?
@brianstorms @davew @dangillmor technically i *think* this is public info
@mmurdoch @davew @dangillmor Yes it is public info but I don’t care. It potentially puts people in danger. Forget Musk for a moment: pretend it’s “bettyjet” and it has all Betty White’s realtime travel data, and some nut shows up at Butler Aviation at Van Nuys Airport with intent to harrass or harm when she gets off her plane. All public info. Legit use of that info? No imho.
@brianstorms @mmurdoch @davew @dangillmor The data are available for planes, not for people, and I don't think Betty White never owned her own private jet.
@not2b @mmurdoch @davew @dangillmor Pro-tip: look up the word “hypothetical” 🙄
@brianstorms @mmurdoch @davew @dangillmor I'm not a fan of slippery slope arguments.
@not2b @mmurdoch @davew @dangillmor Slippery Slope Arguments are one of my favorite bands. We’ll just have to agree to disagree.
@brianstorms @dangillmor -- what's horrific is the doxxing. we agree. that account should have been shut down. it's unacceptable, no matter who the target is. a nazi tactic.
@davew @dangillmor Musk is deserving of dersion for his trademark 180s, imperiously announcing, like Nero, to let a gladiator live, then the next day you find out he ordered the gladiator terminated. He’s a total joke in that regard, but doxxing is doxxing. That said, I assume he uses a godmode equivalent on twitter and gets all the deets on any account he has issues with, including DMs. Utterly untrustworthy.
@davew You keep using that word. Posting publicly available data about the location of a plane is not in the same league as killing six million Jews and a couple of million members of other hated groups. Please find another word to indicate your disapproval.
@davew @dangillmor I understand your concern but airplanes are not viewed in the same way as, say, cars. The registered owner/company is available by entering the aircraft’s tail number on the FAA's registry website. It’s public knowledge.

@elonjet @dangillmor and it’s not just ElonJet removed it’s all trackers it seems:

Mastodon
@dangillmor @elonjet same here. Nice of that sociopath to give it free publicity

@dangillmor I’ve known about elonjet since its inception. I think it’s a form of doxxing, and just as potentially pernicious. I don’t think it is in the public interest to put this info out there, regardless of whose travel is being revealed, be it someone you absolutely loathe, someone you absolutely love, or someone you’ve never heard of.

Would it be any different if I started a “dancar” account on mastodon, tracking Dan Gillmor’s car’s whereabouts at any moment?

@brianstorms because federal law does not permit you too do that with a personal vehicle, for starters. The flight data is public for good reasons.
@dangillmor @elonjet yeah i would have never heard about this if it wasn't suppressed
@dangillmor @elonjet weird, it's still showing as down for me on birdsite. Did it get re-suspended?
