Beneath the "Marshall Law" joke is an issue of deadly seriousness.

Martial law means suspension of habeas corpus, which means limitless arrest and detention without having to prove any crime. It would mean suspending Congress -- and local government. It would mean dictatorship.

@tristansnell Thank you! The focus I've seen on the spelling -- sort of, "haha they're so dumb" -- trivializes the seriousness of the underlying issues. Journalists (and others) are not doing us any favors by making fun.

@tristansnell Which is EXACTLY what the GQP leaders and MAGAs want. Well, MAGA supporters *think* they want this because they think it will be used against “others”, i.e, POC, Dems, Libs, women, etc…. They don’t understand that they will be equally affected until it happens to them or someone they know. 🙄 #GQP #MartialLaw #MarshalLaw

You forgot to add that once martial law is declared, rescinding that declaration is not an easy thing - even if metrics are set in place which would require the restoration of civil rights.

Not fully sure what all this is in reference to, but imo once the tipping point is reached and martial law is declared in a situation, that situation will only get worse.

Why would it be a stretch to say the civil war never ended. It was dormant and Trump Republicans hv reignited it. @tristansnell

@tristansnell We saw what that looks like in September 2020 in Portland. Protesters and videographers beaten and thrown into unmarked vans shortly after Bill Barr was here and our Proud Boy cops went off the clock.
