Press reports of the potential for global spread of MERS due to travel to QATAR mislead their readers by using the name "Camel Flu" in titles.

MERS, with a reported case fatality rate of 35%, along with SARS and COVID are three zoonotic diseases that are more similar to each other than any other known disease.

Effective testing/surveillance can stop MERS, 10 years of cases total about 2,500.

@yaneerbaryam

Hard to imagine it's MERs, and how strange it seems to be that they are leaving just "regular COVID" - which is now dozens of variants, out of the panic stories.

COVID was considered deadly a year ago, it still kills thousands every week.

Why jump to MERs? Many more people would have already succumbed were it MERs.

It seems like Islamophobia or some other prejudices clouding their thinking.

@MelonDC The press likes to create spectacle and attention grabbing headlines are their main attraction.

When they are pointing to something unimportant that works. When there really is something important, they are conflicted by their business owner's agendas.

@yaneerbaryam

It is so frustrating that even when the members of the press have members sick or (or who die) they can't see the truth or realize somebody is lying to them. Or maybe they just don't care and want to lie.

I miss the days of investigative journalism etc. But even when I was a teen in the Clinton era it was mostly just sensationalized news.

@yaneerbaryam Well, if effective testing/surveillance is what's needed, I have some bad news...

@MolnarSteven

Amazing that this causes so much difficulty when there is so much capability in keeping track of air plane tickets, passports, payments, and luggage (OK that one is doubtful).

@yaneerbaryam
Some useful reading for those who might be concerned or just want to know a bit more.
