My non-legal advice: if your actions facially meet the elements of the crime in the group chat name, change the group chat name. https://www.afr.com/companies/financial-services/ftx-s-inner-circle-had-a-secret-chat-group-called-wirefraud-20221213-p5c5sx (h/t @mmasnick )
FTX’s inner circle had a secret chat group called ‘Wirefraud’

The revelation comes as founders Sam Bankman-Fried faces a hearing.

Australian Financial Review

@kendraserra @mmasnick This reminds me of a client I once had who was appealing his conviction for being a drug kingpin. Among his many problems was the fact that the feds had him on wiretap loudly telling his co-conspirators that "I am a drug kingpin!"

(We lost our appeal).

"Not Wirefraud", got it

@molly0xfff @kendraserra within minutes of this headline my law school alumni group signal was “not wirefraud” and it wasn’t even me. Good job, chat, well done.
@luis_in_brief @molly0xfff @kendraserra don't forget the wink emoji, it's a crucial part of making sure everyone knows how not wire fraud the groupchat is
@kendraserra @mmasnick note to self,,, avoid pothead's are us user group.
@kendraserra
Alternatively, consider not doing the crime... (Ok, I guess I'm getting carried away here)
@mmasnick @Popehat
@kendraserra @mmasnick counterpoint: As an investigator, please continue to clearly label your crimes.
@kendraserra @mmasnick I’ve tried a couple of cases alleging wire fraud. This is not a good fact.

People always say it's unrealistic how villains explain their plans in movies. But really, it happens all the time.

@robhelpychalk @kendraserra @mmasnick what is the fun in making an elaborate plan if you cannot tell everybody about it?
@kendraserra @mmasnick a little on the nose, isn't it?
@kendraserra @mmasnick just like as a general rule of crime….errr….crime rule. Listen to the crime rules, people!

@kendraserra @mmasnick
People who knew nothing about FTX knew that cryptocurrency is a scam.

Kind of like alchemy. Newton likely caused his own death from lead poisoning while trying to turn lead into gold. Plenty of his contemporaries avoided similar deaths by noticing how idiotic many of the arguments of alchemy were (e.g. wanting infinite gold/life doesn't make you greedy)

@kendraserra @mmasnick So you're saying that when my husband writes checks to his friends and writes "Illegal drug transaction" in the memo field, he should consider refraining from that for any transactions that do in fact involve illegal drugs?

@kendraserra @mmasnick

I feel like Stringer Bell covered this awhile back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBdGOrcUEg8
