Honestly, I am from the Wild West days of the internet - BEFORE it became dominated by The Web™️.
We all did cannonball style jumps into the murky depths. It was fine.

You:
• find places that work,
• stay away from places that don't,
• keep in mind that trolls live out there, and
• (particularly if you're female / young / a minority) protect your privacy

People congregate where the coding is done well and they can find their tribe.
