The thing I want out of Mastodon is single sign on. I want to be able to go from website to website, forum to forum, video game to video game, and be able to recognize the same names. I don't need every single thing a person I follow posts online to be fed to me(I find that counter productive). I want to be able to go from place to place and bring my name with me, and be able to slide into and out of different moderated communities, just like the old internet.
Hubzilla has something called Remote authentication involving the Zot protocol, but the implementation feels very heavy handed:
Mastodon has a page about SSO that's completely barren. The only thing it has is a link to a GitHub pull request that brings up OpenID connect:
I don't know what OpenID connect is. SSO can mean one or both of two things:
-Using things like Facebook or my Gmail account to allow for login into my mastodon account.
-Using my Mastodon account to authenticate my identity across different websites(or other instances).
