“We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

On this day in 1986, Elie Wiesel delivered his timeless Nobel Prize acceptance speech https://www.themarginalian.org/2014/12/10/elie-wiesel-nobel-prize-speech/

Elie Wiesel’s Timely Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech on Human Rights and Our Shared Duty in Ending Injustice

“We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

@mariapopova “I explained …that the world did know and remained silent. And that is why I swore never to be silent... We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant.“
Powerful words, thanks.

@mariapopova “Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.” This is such an important lesson. Makes me think about the reverence for neutrality in American journalism and how it enabled the election of the former president in 2016, among many other casualties.
@mariapopova powerful, timeless words.

@mariapopova
After the first Twitter files dump, Mediaite Dan Abrams told Colby Hall, “It is stunning that with access to all the internal e-mails at Twitter that they don’t have a single smoking gun that implicates a government leader or even any campaign in wrongdoing.”

It was all smoke and mirrors for those hungry enough to believe whatever coincides w/their warped values. For every cult worshipper, there are dozens of wannabes who eagerly push false narratives.

@mariapopova So true. Be wary of those who always sit on the fence. Or worse, never have an opinion.

@mariapopova

Thank you.

Camus' letter to his teacher reminded me of some of the great ones I have had and of their legacy in me.

I can't fully agree - staying neutral or joining the mob are sometimes the only possible choices (unless someone likes being punched).

In every country there's a lot of dangerous groups that you shouldn't cross. Some are even most of the population. The cause they start with is usually right, but they become overzealous with time.

Attempting neutrality protects groups from "who's not with us is against us" mentality.

@mariapopova yeah, just don't look at anything else he said after the 90's.
@mariapopova And now more than ever in my lifetime we need to decide which side we are on and what sort of society we want to live in
