Apple listened, and did the right thing.

Thanks to everyone who helped us in this fight—this is a huge win, and a turning point for privacy.

VICTORY! Apple Commits to Encrypting iCloud, Drops Phone-Scanning Plans

Apple announced it will provide fully encrypted iCloud backups, meeting a longstanding demand by EFF and other privacy-focused organizations. We applaud Apple for listening to experts, child advocates, and users who want to protect their most sensitive data.

Thank you for your working !

But how about the iCloud storage in China ?

@tansunit @eff they have said they plan the same level of service for China. Not sure how that will actually go, but that is their (public-facing) plan at the moment.
@eff @tansunit Apple, if it wants to operate in China, must comply with local laws. For what I understand, Beijing can and has passed laws requiring businesses to keep its citizen’s data in China AND having decryption keys available for the government.
@eff @nfd awesome! When do I get to turn it on for my (no betas) device?

@eff @nfd ah. More careful reading of the article answered my question anyway. “Early 2023”

F*** yeah, yubikey-based 2FA!

@eff it must be optional. If a person isn’t tech savvy and knows they’ll likely lose their recovery keys or forget their password then making their account super inaccessible is a problem for them. My 80+ year old mother would have a very hard time as she always forgets her passwords. She writes them down then has several passwords to choose from as she doesn’t erase the older ones. On by default would be a nightmare for her and us.

Don’t be premature, there’s no win yet.
