Looks like Elmo is going to start charging for what you can get at Mastodon for free.

TweetDeck Preview terms

@emptywheel had to give my phone number in order to receive a code as I was locked out of my account earlier today just for blocking several phony/not accounts. (Never had that happen before)
@emptywheel yeah, THAT warrants a Content Warning
@emptywheel that will be a neat trick.
@emptywheel : I read the terms. It looks like a sucker deal.

@emptywheel

sounds like he’s picking up that idea from Post. they have a pay for some articles setup..

@emptywheel Hootsuite and Sprout Social would like to have a word
@emptywheel I have been permanently suspended from that crappy birdsite for using the well known colloquialism “backstabbing”… and all of my efforts to plead my case have been for naught…so as for me … GOOD RIDDANCE TO TWITTER. 😁😁
@emptywheel I suspected as much--the free speech BS was just a cover for harvesting user phone numbers.

@emptywheel

Are you posting on …Post.?

@emptywheel To be fair, that's what Counter Dot Soc also does. :P
@emptywheel and why is this "sensitive content" 😜
@emptywheel You shouldn't have to pay Musk $8 per year for giving him your phone number--he should rent your phone number info for $8 per month.
@emptywheel It's a small thing, but I've also noticed that suddenly within the past week, I am no longer able to scroll public twitter as a visitor without an account (like many, I deleted it). Now after scrolling down a few tweets, the site locks behind a pop-up telling me to create an account if I want to even VIEW twitter. This further restricts access to information e..g reporting and experts. The milking of twitter continues.
@genoforprez @emptywheel tip: if you click "login" and then dismiss the window you get a few more scrolls before it tries again
@semiquaver @emptywheel That's a good tip. Thank you, kind stranger.
@emptywheel Marcy, is Elon officially a publisher now? Seems like hiring Matt Taibbi to write an investigative piece for twitter on twitter is an official act of publication. Couldn’t this put his 230 protection in jeopardy?
@emptywheel Content Warning is a strictly Mastadon thing. No such thing on my Friendica account but I do know how to use BBcode, as luck would have it. In BBcode it's the Spoiler command.

For example: to wit--One good thing about having a permanently suspended account is that I can still read Twitter without the pop-up for visitors. I rather like being suspended, ha.

@emptywheel
To be a viable replacement for Twitter, Mastodon needs
1) a working search function, ideally with an advanced search option, and
2) reasonable thread management.

That the search only works for complete user names and hashtags is very nearly a deal-breaker for me, and that all threads get screwed-up isn't helping.

@emptywheel

True, but real folk who keep the wheels turning here need to eat?

@emptywheel

I finally had enough and deleted my Twitter account. I am getting my Peace back. Twitter was making me angrier since elon took over. Twitter is also making folks I really liked the most, angrier in their tweets too.

I had enough.
