This is the amount of disassembly required to replace the feet on an HP 53310A MDA. The only thing I didn’t have to remove was the front panel and the carry handle.
Someone had removed the tilt feet (the wire loops) for some reason. They can’t be replaced without disassembling the entire instrument. I just added them back.
The plastic feet use these familiar M3 threaded inserts. All of them broke free upon removal, so I installed new ones. Hopefully they stay in place. I think McMaster stocks a variant with a thicker wall which I’ll try next if these fail. (I really hope they don’t fail, because I don’t ever want to take this instrument completely apart again.)
Reassembly is progressing very slowly due to some very stubborn case screws that refused to line up with the mainboard standoffs. The mainboard is the large board that sits in the bottom of the case (under the CRT).
This is a good sign.
