NEW: New York City has just issued an advisory for everyone to wear a mask in public spaces because COVID levels are high in all 5 boroughs.
Issuing an advisory for all New Yorkers to mask up because COVID levels are high is a step in the right direction. However, the best way to increase mask wearing is to issue a mask mandate & distribute free N95 masks. The New York City Mayor and Health Commissioner need to take more action!

John Chapman@luckytran What needs to be made clearer is the mask primary purpose is NOT to protect the wearer but to protect others from a virus the wearer may unwittingly be carrying. It's fine to not care about your own health but it's selfish to put the health of others at risk. #masks #Covid19

kdnyhan@luckytran that's good and I hope it helps, but, er, haven't all five boroughs been at high CDC community level for a while, since before Thanksgiving? Maybe they went down and back up and I didn't notice.
@kdnyhan They’ve been up and down at various points. This is the first time all 5 are high at the same time. That said we are vastly undercounting COVID tests (we aren’t counting home tests), so likely the real “Community Levels” have been high for a while, as the hospitalizations component has been constantly high, while oddly the number of positive cases has fluctuated (likely a testing issue).

@luckytran Unless New York City makes it's mandatory, the vast majority (90% by my estimate) will not wear a mask.
@darnell yep, the city needs to make masks mandatory during surges. The data tells us it’s the most effective way of increasing mask wearing.
@luckytran Could that even work nowadays‽ Conservative judges have been striking down mask mandates now, & even President Biden has given up on forcing the masses to wear masks.
