Just released: AT Kyrios, v0.2!

A curious, slightly psychedelic blackletter family.

It offers an optical size axis that adjusts width, contrast, letterforms, taking things from dramatic, eye-catching headlines to surprisingly readable small text.

Kyrios by ArrowType - Future Fonts

Type tester available on the Kyrios minisite → (https://kyrios.arrowtype.com/) Kyrios is a curious, slightly psychedelic blackletter family. This family is a study in contrasts – not just of thick/thin strokes, but of history and aesthetics. It pairs geometric simplicity with Art Nouveau curves, and a blackletter lowercase with a Lombardic uppercase. (Also included is an alternate blackletter uppercase, which can be useful for a more consistent appearance). Though it may seem like a modern idea, it is actually an interpretation of lettering from a grave monument carved in the late 1800s, located in Green-Wood Cemetery, in Brooklyn, NY. Kyrios comes in a range of optical sizes, from a narrow, striking Display to a surprisingly readable Text that has proportions and letterforms which are more familiar to modern readers. Despite these juxtapositions – or because of them – Kyrios delivers a harmonious aesthetic palette and offers more utility than most display typefaces.

Aside from a bunch of improvements to drawing, spacing, and kerning, v0.2 adds two new stylistic sets, and a bunch of additional language support.

You can try it out, read a bit more about it, and see high-resolution slides at the Kyrios minisite:

@arrowtype Nice and intuitive minisite! And the font looks good too – I like how the forms develop almost organically in different optical sizes.
@janipulkka thanks for the kind words! That is a nice way to put it. The organic flourishes are definitely a bit part of what drew me to this style originally.
@arrowtype Power*Gestalta. You reeled me in.
@Luke haha, you found it! You’re the first person to mention that Easter egg.
@arrowtype this is so much work and so fantastic. Congrats! Love it.
@Luke thanks so much, Luke! And yes, haha, I’m guessing this is well above the average number of hours put into a “single weight only” typeface 😅
@arrowtype I don’t doubt it! I’m really going to look at your design because I had an odd ‘rounded swash geometric-ish fraktur’ idea the other day. I think that’s what I’d call it…
