@tristansnell Whelan's case is a bit weird. When you google it you get all these articles from entirely legitimate outlets that implicitly suggest he got "honeytrapped" by one the dozens of young Russian military officers he would take out for dinners in Moscow on multiple trips. They all but say it ("Whelan seemed to enjoy the danger that came with flirting with members of the FSB"). Whelan apparently took a lot of big risks that led to his being set up.
