Coal does several things they like.
It appeals to them socially as it confirms that some peasant is down a hole being constantly reminded of "their place",
It appeals to their traditional Tory economic illiteracy as its financial gains are much shorter term than wind turbines, solar panels etc.
You can still have a grouse moor above a coal mine and foxes are hard to chase around a field full of solar panels!
