@secretsloth my point was the cultural attitude and how americans think they're the center of the universe and if you don't conform to their norms you're evil

like the audacity online to attack others for not giving a fuck about american issues... but the americans never cared about shit outside their bubble either

it's the entitlement i have issues with

@sozou ohhhh I thought we were just culturally illiterate. Which we are. Lol sorry. That's also true. 😱 Not good, not good. We don't even really have much culture to put out there 😭

@secretsloth i remember that i was once banned by an american for saying the Amis word for "cat" because for them it sounded like "pussy"

ngl that's racist for someone who was boasting all about" oooh black lives matter, support indigenous people 😍πŸ₯Ί"

it's just yiiiiikes

@sozou that's also a super cute word for cat, did I say that? I always thought that was sad, that we made it mean something dirty. That was not always true and it really does seem like a good word for cats! People are so weird.

@secretsloth "Pusi" is truly one of the hardest going words ever. 😼

And of course, I also had a little giggle at the Amis word for goat (Siri) but like... some ppl just were plain racist about it πŸ˜’

@sozou Siri is the word for goat?? That's :3 adorable! 🐐 I don't really like the way English sounds, personally, and there aren't very good words for feelings. It's not a good language for poetry or trying to be specific about a lot of things. I remember my Dad telling me about Hausa, and how there is a word for "over there," and to communicate how far, you say it louder. I always thought that was really smart! I don't know why we don't appreciate these cool ideas and cool words.

@secretsloth this was fact-checked by true siri πŸβœ…

i also love rattling around in the internet looking for some fun stuff and share them here. i think it's the best way to weave cultures together as they will inevitably blend one day.

if i feel confident enough one day i want to post daily words in Amis (or maybe later grab up a different indigenous taiwanese language??) for the fedi

@sozou oh my gosh I want to call all goats "siri" now, that is a much cuter word than "goat" and I love goats! πŸ₯° I'll have to look up a video to make sure I'm saying it right, I'm probably not πŸ˜… but I shall try to learn it.
@secretsloth if you know how to use IPA there's a wiki article on the language and the letter pronunciation: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amis_language
Amis language - Wikipedia

@sozou I technically do but I get some of the symbols confused, which is fine, since I just have to check any that I get confused. Thank you! I learned something really cool today! 🫢🐐 Well, two things actually, since there are two words. I guess I just like siris best, our former neighbors have a farm now and have the CUTEST baby siris :3 we used to see them sometimes. So small!

@secretsloth i wish there was a dictionary that shows both singular and plural version of the nouns (unless it's both the same thing?)

but yes, Siri Approved πŸβœ…

@sozou haha you're right, I didn't even notice that I added an S there, what is the plural? Or are they the same? πŸ˜… One must always have several baby 🐐 much cuter that way.

I hope if you do a daily word here, it will be a good experience, because I know many people would love it! It's so awful that horrible people can discourage such good content. I hope it doesn't happen, but someone says something awful, the mods here are really great. They will help. πŸ’œ

@secretsloth I don't know, there's little easy-to-digest resources on Amis language...

and honestly if I ever feel confident enough to not make a fuck up I want to make a daily word πŸ₯Ί learning together is much more fun

on a sidenote... "wacu" = 🐢

@sozou oh my goshhhhh what a cute word! You know, when I was small, I wanted to find the best words from every language and have my own language with only the coolest words πŸ˜… it didn't occur to my child brain that nobody would understand it, but I still love learning words anyway.

Here is my wacu, since I do not have any cool words that I can remember right now (it's 5 am here)

@secretsloth thats a cute wacu can i pet it

also! the dictionary at https://e-dictionary.ilrdf.org.tw/ami/about/1.htm suggests that the spellings are "posi" and "waco" for cat and dog respectively 🐢🐱

I hope one day there will be an English-Ami dictionary ❀️

@sozou that would be really amazing! I would love to just have dictionaries, for a lot of languages most people don't know. Of course it's tricky with languages like Greek and Mandarin and Russian. I did try with Mandarin, but I can't hear the tones :c although I did learn ... let me think. The word for hat? Mao-ze? Something like that? And the word for monkey, hodze, and a few others when I was in mainland China years ago. That was all I could manage. Sadness.

@secretsloth hat (màozi) - 帽子
monkey (hóuzi) - 猴子

i think it would be fun if the indigenous cultures went as popular as the Korean Wave with K-Pop, K-Dramas etc... maybe then we would get more resources to learn from

BTW: was looking in the meantime, and dictionary says...
hairy/fluffy = cifanohay
elephant = eco (no, not pronounced like the english eco)

🦣 the one piece is real 🦣

@sozou which way around do the words go I wonder, would it be hairy-elephant, or elephant-hairy? πŸ€”

@secretsloth
apparently the structure is <adjective> a <noun> from what I see... so it would be "cifanohay a eco"

but again, it's just my guess I don't want to pass as truth to avoid unconsciously spreading misinfo

and the dictionaries don't have a word for mastodon.. or mammoth

@sozou well, it's the best we can do for now, as long as we know we're not quite right, it's okay 😊 I found this video on YouTube, it's in the Navajo language, a song of morning blessing. I don't speak Navajo, it is very hard to learn and unfortunately not many people speak it - and of course, it should be taught to people of their tribe first. But I do love listening to traditional songs and reading folk tales. https://youtu.be/jHiD6PaWnus

@secretsloth ooh thats beautiful actually! i think my spawner had a CD disc with Native Americam music... but it was like a decade ago, and I can't recall much from it (back then I was all super into vocaloids so wasn't interested in traditional stuff)
In exchange I will link to one of my favorite Ami songs - it's not for any ceremony (I think?), the YouTube title says it's a dance practice song... or "Ami Cha-cha"

https://youtu.be/G8VhOIvfMJ0

by the way, did you check the spotify playlist i shared~?

ι˜ΏηΎŽζ—θͺžζŒζ›²η·΄ηΏ’:ε„ͺ美舞姿(阿美恰恰)

YouTube
@sozou yesssss! Just turned it back on. I love listening to all kinds of world music, sometimes it's better when I don't know what they're saying πŸ˜… I like to focus on the way the words sound. Also, languages often sound different when people are singing, so that's a cool thing to experience. But it can be really hard to find, haha I'm packing right now, my hubby is going to wonder what the heck is going on down here. 🐐πŸ’ͺ

@secretsloth on a sidenote... I listened to the song I sent, and after that I got One-Winged Angel... which is oh well, orchestra, rock and latin choir in one song.

When you have a dance practice in your village at 5pm but you have to slay a fallen angel with a super long sword at 6pm.

@sozou hahah! I love that. It's so cool when those things come together in art. Latin is a pretty cool language, I've been trying to study it (I'm quite slow due to the narcolepsy, chronic sleep deprivation,) but it allows me to understand so much of the Italian and German that's in my feed. I did briefly study Italian, but only for 2 semesters, so that's barely anything. I love learning how languages link together. One of my favorite things. πŸ’œ

@secretsloth speaking of music and connecting... now I'm curious what would you get from connecting Ami's traditional music and, say, Poland's folk music

both are considered traditional, but the sounds for obvious reasons are two different worlds... wondering what we could end up with

if i were a musician i would be trying to connect the dots but 😭

@sozou I'm not talented enough to find out, but I'm learning. I have a guitar and an erhu, but I can't figure out how to get the erhu tuned exactly right πŸ˜… I'll be moving soon and then I'll figure it out! And then maybe I'll screeeeeech some folk music πŸ˜‚ no seriously you're right though, I love hearing different kinds of folk music played on unexpected instruments. I'll see if I can find some examples when I'm more awake.

@secretsloth going to offtop a bit but~ I think I already said it that I want to visit the tribe villages one day... but I'm afraid my AuDHD and RSD will join up together making the stay unenjoyable. and I'm always afraid that the people there may find me annoying or just bad.

wish I had more courage because such a stay would definitely be quite an experience

@sozou yeah I understand that, although the audhd might not be the issue, culture shock is just hard. I also have audhd and am very good at being formal and polite, when I visited China I was very respectful and formal and did everything I could to be agreeable and follow instructions. But I found out my friend's mom was talking about me in front of my face in Mandarin, saying things like, I didn't talk enough at breakfast. The family didn't speak English! What could I say?

@secretsloth it's not about being impolite, but rather my internal self will start freaking out.

also the RSD would be kicking in with every smallest mistake like "they now hate you" or the fact i may stumble onto an intolerant group that hold prejudice towards trans/nd people

perhaps if i had someone i know well that is part of their community i would get along easier

@sozou ah, that's a good point. There might be a way to get to know people in the community, and then maybe it would make you more comfortable. Even though my friend's mom wasn't happy with me, her aunt and uncle were fine, they were very happy that I can use chopsticks and would try all the food, and I learned to do a tea ceremony with my friend's uncle 😊 so in the end, I didn't let her mom's comments bother me too much. I think people appreciate interest in culture. You have that.

@secretsloth first though I'd like to see some mainstream parts of Taiwan, and here I got a helper called my bro, so I won't feel so alienated~

but no money to travel or time... huhu

i always liked cultural exchange, even in mini version and especially when it comes to food

@sozou oh my gosh absolutely!! This is actually the one thing I love about America, we have all the food!! Right now I live near Washington DC, my favorite restaurants are Thai, Chinese (I can't remember where the chef is from, I'll have to look it up,) Afghan, Vietnamese, Japanese, Lebanese - we have so many! I have celiac, so I can't have wheat, but many Asian restaurants have food I can eat. 😍 I love foooooood.

@secretsloth speaking of food: i found a website with resources on Amis cuisine - I will be fair I'm not a fan of seafood and veggies, but I want to try out some of that meat πŸ‘€

(the site is in chinese so you'd have to use google translate to read it)

@sozou ooooooh yes! As soon as we move I'm going to get to cook my own food, I would love to try this! My poor family is going to have to eat all kinds of "weird" food πŸ˜‚ they're not really into food like I am.

I would really like to visit Taiwan someday. Especially since China has gotten so scary now. But I could visit Taiwan, it seems much more open and like, very cool and interesting. And I wouldn't get government kidnapped, which is a plus. 😱

@secretsloth you get to experience both the more authentic chinese culture without CCP's bastardisation of it AND the indigenous cultures

that's an absolute win

AND they have a temple dedicated to the Chinese gay deity : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tu%27er_Shen

Tu'er Shen - Wikipedia

@sozou oh my gosh SERIOUSLY! I have been so heartbroken because like, I visited China like 20 years ago, so I know things weren't perfect then, but they weren't like they are now. The family I visited was in Fuzhou, which is absolutely beautiful, and close to many very old and lovely cultural sites. It makes me so sad that the world is closed off from all of that again. πŸ˜” It seemed like things were becoming more open. And now...

@secretsloth I only feel sorry for the innocent people who have to live under such rule...

...anyways, I'm so hungry now after all the food talk

Yesterday I came to the conclusion that since Pokemon is taking inspiration from around the world for regions, they should take a look at Taiwan.

a lot of potential there~ I used to work on a fan imagination of how it would look like, maybe I can share some stuff if you want to

@sozou yeah, exactly, I feel bad for the people, and those ancient places, it's not their fault :c

I would love to see your thoughts on what Pokemon might look like in Taiwan, that sounds very cool! Have you gotten to play the new game? I haven't got it, I have a Switch, but we're so busy with this move, we are going all the way from Washington DC to the south of Georgia. It is a long way. So I don't have time right now. 😱

@secretsloth i havent gotten to play it because I don't have a Switch

But the idea started around when Legends Arceus were announced and it all clicked in my head perfectly.

The idea was to weave the present and past. While the modern region's lore would deal with the problems of today and cherish the multiple cultures, the past would be more chill, kinda like Breath of The Wild stuff.

I had an idea that after the lore of modern region comes to an end (typical woohoo i am the champion now etc.), the protagonist researches the history of region and gets to use a time machine crafted by one of the professors... which throws them back to ancient times and they need to make their way out of it.

Several characters I designed were supposed to have direct ancestors in the ancient version of the region.

There's much more to say, but I have no idea where to start and if you're still interested

@sozou ooooooh this sounds so cool!  I love games and shows that weave in folklore, and this would be so much fun to do as a Pokemon journey! So clever!

@secretsloth when I was making graphics for it I made a mockup of the language selection screen where it was possible to pick one of the indigenous languages

and tbh that'd be a big brain move for preservation of these languages. what's a more fun way than to add these in a game?

@sozou ooooooh bonus if there's a way to use mini games to learn some of those languages! To train Pokemon, of course.

@secretsloth remember when black and white had separate gym themes for each leader?

let's bring back that shit

@sozou totally! Old school Pokemon was best Pokemon. I still have my old giant Gameboy and the original Pokemon blue and yellow versions. 😁

@secretsloth also since indigenous Taiwanese and native Hawaiians have the same ethnolinguistic origin, they could sprinkle a bit of Alola on the new region.

Nintendo is really sleeping on a goldmine

@sozou imagine the adorableness of Hawaiian inspired Pokemon!
@secretsloth but... Alola is based on Hawaii. You didn't play Sun and Moon?
easily my top fave games.
@sozou no, I didn't get to play those. I missed a bunch of editions between having consoles and being busy. I've tried to keep up between reading and learning from people, and of course streaming and things. Hopefully I'll get to catch up more in the future. πŸ₯°
@secretsloth btw i found the art i made for the project, do you wanna see?
@sozou yes please, I would love to see!

@secretsloth found this cool feature I developed: you could get a special variant of Pikachu in the various parts of the region by doing some tasks! (also the handle is of my IG account that no longer has content)

here are some examples of it

@sozou oh my gosh! So cute!! 😍 And so perfect!
@secretsloth i also thought of bringing back IRL distribution events (eg. you can get a special item in your game by attending a place in real life as opposed to just typing a code and getting an item with no effort) to get special pokemon variants, items and even unlock new places (like the aurora ticket or azure flute)
@sozou that could be pretty cool. I have no idea how those events work, I don't think anything like that has been available near me. But it sounds like a good way to get people to connect with places in a tangible way.
