I'm sick as a dog. My chair has made it clear he wants "butts in seats", and was reluctant to let me teach remotely once, last week.

Pretty sure he would have denied the request if I hadn't added, "...Or I can take a sick day and you can find an adjunct or other faculty member to teach today's lecture."

I'm still sick. I can cancel class, but then students will fail exams. There is no real possibility of anyone providing the content the students need.

#Faculty #sickdays are often an illusion.

@DarrinLRogers I hear you. I honestly don't think any colleague in my department has the time to substitute me in my class (not that they aren't able). Everyone is working their ass off.
@rossoneri Exactly. And there is no provision made by administration for "what if someone can't teach?" We don't have a substitute pool like K-12, we don't have (apparently) any money to give a colleague who might want to step up. But somehow I accumulate "sick days" negotiated by my union 30+ years ago. They're kind of meaningless because nobody at the top ever thinks they'll have to pay for them.
