I’ve yet to get a grasp on how Mastadon works. Is it more vast than twitter? Feels like a black hole to me.

@coaster Hi Coaster, I'm new too. It is like twitter but a little different, in that you've got 3 choices about what to view:
1) Home, which is just a feed of all the toots (posts) by accounts you follow- and you will see all of them, b/c there's no algorithm!

2)Your Local feed, which will show you toots from accounts on your local server (toot.community)

3)The Federated feed, which shows toots from all the servers connected to Mastodon.

You will have to follow folks to get content in "home"

@coaster Correction: I guess if as peachfront mentions, you follow hashtags, those will show up in your "home" feed as well. I didn't think of it since I've not followed any hashtags yet.
@Montjoie thanks for the great tips! Much appreciated.

@coaster I should have mentioned that I'm on a laptop. I don't know how the mobile experience compares, since I've not tried it yet.

If you want to try the Federated feed, the trick is to scroll down a bit- this will stop it from zooming by you, and you can peruse at your leisure.
