Now I feel like I am on the bird and have to start blocking... it's still all left/right nazi/blue ... where are my creators? Where are my horror folks? I don't need to replace the bird with a decentralized bird... #horror #writing #argh

@DavidNiallWilson Sadly it's the way the internet is these days. Politics, politics and more politics. It's going to be the same whichever social media platform you choose.

The only answer is to be ruthless when it comes to blocking people, and use filters. Lots of filters.

@d4doome @DavidNiallWilson yup, it's an open platform so within reason anyone can be here, including whatever flavour of idiot we cannot stand. I think it has to be down to searching for one's people using hashtags, otherwise run the gauntlet of searching the public feeds to find them. Keep your personal feed to the people and content you want visible there - selectively follow, mute, block, filter, etc. Good luck...

@FakePlasticDunk @DavidNiallWilson Yeah, every social media platform requires the same approach. If you want to avoid a toxic atmosphere you have to take active steps.

If you know that someone is going to make you angry or upset, unfollow and mute them. If you know there's a subject that always makes you angry or upset, filter it.

And don't be afraid to use the mute button and filters extravagantly. You simply don't have to engage with people or issues that upset you.

@d4doome @DavidNiallWilson the nice thing about Mastodon is that we have far more control over all that than those media with a commercial angle!

@FakePlasticDunk @DavidNiallWilson Yeah, we have more control. It's just a matter of learning to use Mastodon in the way that suits the individual.

Mastodon has plenty of potential.

The biggest thing is that people need to realise that social media can be fun. You're allowed to use social media for pure enjoyment.

I have never had an unpleasant experience on Twitter, because I'm there to have fun rather than get into arguments. If someone bugs me, they get muted.

@DavidNiallWilson I'm not seeing any of that in my following (save for one account and I knew he often posts political opinions). I don't read "local" posts, so my feed is very currated. That's the thing I love most about here versus Twitter.
