Happy birthday to Chris Hillman, who turns 78 today, born December 4, 1944 in Los Angeles, Calif. Hillman was a founding member of The Byrds; Flying Burrito Brothers; Souther, Hillman and Furay; Manassas; and the Desert Rose Band. He released one of his best solo recordings a few years back, the Tom Petty-produced 'Bidin' My Time' (Rounder Records), which I can't recommend highly enough.

It was my privilege to work publicity for his splendid memoir, 'Time Between: My Life as a Byrd, Burrito Brother, and Beyond' (BMG Books), for 18 months – first the hard cover, then the paperback, and the audio book, plus his surrounding Stories & Songs Tour.

I most recently saw Chris at West Hollywood's Troubadour at high noon on a weekday when the Country Music Hall of Fame presented a press conference for its Western Edge: The Roots and Reverberations of Los Angeles Country-Rock exhibition
