this would include every depiction of mary in a nativity or passion play btw

@selfagency This varied by genre, as well as time/place, even in areas roughly defined as European. Ancient Roman mime ("mimus"), which included spoken dialogue, had female actors. It was considered less reputable than many other forms of drama partly for that reason.
