How is it even POSSIBLE that in the US of today, POTUS needs to tweet that the Holocaust happened? I have no words for my outrage that hate is spreading to this extent, in this land, where so many of our ancestors sought refuge from Nazis.
@rabbijill I know, but I'm grateful that POTUS is being so unambiguous about it.
@rabbijill I understand your outrage but I’ve grown up experiencing this level of hate the indigenous people of this land was also slaughtered like the Jews. The hate these people have has always been there.
@SunaeThomas @rabbijill Yes, that too was genocide and I fear that until the people of America are willing to face these acts openly and honestly we will face this denial and evil again and again.
@statmonkey @rabbijill it never stopped the only change now is the antisemitism is out of control!!!
@statmonkey @SunaeThomas it’s all wrong. None of us are safe until all of us are safe. I truly believe that.
@rabbijill @SunaeThomas Of course. What I can't believe is that there are so many people that don't believe /understand that. It's not like human history is not filled with examples.
@rabbijill How is it even possible that sexual minorities and women are not legally human in America? That christian extremists can determine the law of the land?

@rabbijill My uncle in Germany stood up atop his tank the day after Germany surrendered. A German soldier who hadn't gotten the news shot him dead. My other uncle fought the Nazis at the Battle of the Bulge. I haven't forgotten. Not what nor who they fought for.

America will remember, Rabbi. I believe that.

@mechtild55 I’m so sorry to hear about your uncle. May his memory be a blessing.
@rabbijill Follow Biden on Mastodon , it's official account. Type in Biden you can find it #Bluewave
@rabbijill The number of Gypsie's have never been released it would be interesting it must all so be in millions, They were not loved in Nazi Germany either. #Bluewave

@rabbijill
Before America entered WW2, there were lots of Nazi sympathizers. There were huge rallies, and their slogan was "America first" (sound familiar?).

The Nazis studied us on how to use racism to control white people.

How is this possible?

I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner.

The Republican party has been moving ever-rightward since Nixon started the Southern Strategy.

@tofugolem you are absolutely right. I learned this from that amazing book by Isabel Wilkerson Caste. It’s all of one piece: slavery, genocide, hate — the only way to stop it is for people to stand up & speak out. The GOP is complicit & silent.
@rabbijill
Anti-semitism has been virulent in certain parts of the US population for a long time. It's just that, for the most part, that part of the population has been focused on their hatred for POC. Replacement 'theory' has gained enormous ground in recent years.
@rabbijill Never forget that Nazis studied US government policies towards Indigenous Americans to formulate the Final Solution. Never forget that Margaret Sanger and Nobel Laureate William Shockley believed in Eugenics. Never forget the US currently has active Nazi Parties.
@LaNegresseCanadienne I didn’t realize that the Nazis studied US history of native Americans - I learned from Isabel Wilkerson’s book Caste that they studied how the US treated African Americans to form their policies against Jews. It’s all of one piece.
@rabbijill Indeed, Nazis studied how the US used the Army to forcibly remove and resettle Indigenous Peoples onto reservations, in addition to how the US government established the reservation system as a means of stripping citizenship from people. South African heads of state, Vorster and Strijdom, also studied the reservation system as their blueprint for Apartheid.
@LaNegresseCanadienne wow. All the important hidden history not taught in our history classes. May we learn from this

@rabbijill No "hidden history" exists. US schools teach that the country only has European origins and descendants. Those who want to keep this narrative created controversy around Critical Race Theory which presents a more accurate US historical narrative not shrouded in mythology.

May we continue learning on our journey called life.

@LaNegresseCanadienne It sure was hidden when I was growing up. TBH I'm shocked this wasn't part of our many semesters of history even in rabbinic school. I'm sure that has changed now (I hope) Yes, we must fight for the right to tell the truth and include it. I'm still learning & I hope that never ends.
@rabbijill To whit, Nazis had familiarity with the US racial caste system as codified in Jim Crow laws long before Ms. Wilkerson published her book. In fact, German POWs enjoyed more rights and privileges during both World Wars than Black Americans serving in the military, and in general.
@LaNegresseCanadienne I understand. I’m just saying that I learned about this in Ms Wilkerson’s book - which blew my mind because how could I not have known it? I checked with my community & they were unaware as well. So much for learning history
@rabbijill Sadly, Americans segregate themselves into two separate realms: One all White and one all Black, with non Black ethnicities gravitating more closely towards the White realm. Ethno-religious divisions began during the Bush II Administration and hardened during the Trump Administration. Balkanization of the US took hold in less than two decades.

@rabbijill The NAZI Party also too the concept of Eugenics from the United States. The idea of forced sterilization by the State was in the United States in the Late 19th Century.

The Supreme Court case Buck v Bell (https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/274/200/) was specifically ruled in favor of forced sterilization and has NEVER BEEN OVERTURNED. Eugenics is technically still legal in the United States...

Buck v. Bell, 274 U.S. 200 (1927)

@rabbijill The only theory I can come up with is that newer generations, lacking contact with people who had lived experience of the Holocaust, grow up with a less mature vision of human society. They don’t have enough imagination to emotionally empathize with the victims of the event, and in fact, because of their immaturity and frustration with their lives today, are inclined to sympathize with the haters. They see themselves as victims.
@wtpickens the thing is, the current haters are not just newer generations. See who attends trump rallies.

@rabbijill #AltText A tweet by President Biden:
I just want to make a few things clear:

The Holocaust happened.

Hitler was a demonic figure.

And instead of giving it a platform, our political leaders should be calling out and rejecting antisemitism wherever it hides.

Silence is complicity.

@nickbax thank you. I’m still learning.
