Gaming in 2022 is a wonderful beautiful time…
I remember in the 90s a very snobbish view by many publishers where only the very latest graphics technologies were likely to make money. 3D is here and therefore only 3D will appeal.
Thankfully the gaming landscape now is vast and incredible. No matter the style, it has a place and a community. Pixel art is one such example that lives on and if anything impresses more than ever.
Choice is beautiful.

@jameswoodcock This is an interesting example though, because it actually uses relatively modern technology to disguise 3D models as pixel art. If developers could have done stuff like this back then, it would have been considered cutting edge.

To your main point, I do think a wider variety of styles and technologies can coexist today because of a thriving indie scene, and accessibility of tools, just an interesting example to use. The underlying tech is unlike anything of pixel art's past.

@FromLefcourt very true, it's portraying a style, a perspective and an art of nostalgia. It's pretty fantastic that modern technologies can be used to bring a real sense of the past while pushing forward with the future to add additional benefits.
