@lcamtuf yea, huge open question for me is how good OpenAI could have tuned the error bars here - could they have it respond “I have no idea” 60% of the time with minimal effort (but less buzz), or is that itself a Hard Problem?
@matt @lcamtuf there’s also the question of copyright eventually. Google got into enough legal trouble already over providing snippets in the results. OpenAI has an impressive knowledge paraphrasing model but at some point someone is going to ask “wait, is it absorbing our content and making our traffic vanish?”

I don't think it would be in Google's interest to remove the traffic from sites, that would undermine part of the ads business.
But clearly the risk of googling getting replaced by prompting on another platform is also not something that Google can ignore.
@signof @kiriappeee @lcamtuf Google started doing that years ago, though? They have the sidebar/topbar that tries to answer your question directly (usually by basically quoting wikipedia or stackoverflow).
