Calling racist or violent outbursts the result of mental illnesses helps reinforce the negative stigma.
Fact is, most people suffering from mental illness aren't violent racists!
It also reduces the agency of the racists in the worst way, by excusing their actions, and letting them avoid taking any responsibility.
I'd love to see the vanguard of intellectuals here dissect the connection of MI-labelling with the NRA/GQP attempt to shift gun rights dialoge to "mental health".
