Yes, crime has risen in cities — and elsewhere — over the past few years. But that alone doesn't explain the concern.

Also anecdotally, I have observed my right-leaning neighbors express revulsion at the notion of visiting Portland Oregon, despite our shared interest in quality food and drink to be found there in abundance.
In other words I think your analysis is spot on.

@pbump You're absolutely right that we've recently seen a politically infused surge of this distorted view. But it isn't new.

For years, every time I've left New York I've encountered people whose questions show they believe I live in the crime-infested Gotham of the Batman movies, who take it for granted that I don't venture outside after dark, and are amazed to hear that I EVER ride the subway.

@pbump Heh, I used to be terrified of NYC. Then I moved there, and it was one of the best life experiences I've ever had.
